For a while time, season 65 looked like it would be a mediocre one at best for Team Blitz. However, a strong sprint at the finish turned the year into the best one in the team's history, just surpassing season 63.
The team turned in 5 victories (same as season 63) and 11 results overall (one more than season 63). The numbers are far from telling the whole truth, though.
Some of those results, including one win, were achieved in Division 3, which means the teams finishes in the middle of Division 3, whereas in the last couple of seasons we have been a steady mid Division 4 team.
Not only that, but the Division 3 victory was the teams first classics win as well. Kobus Sligter, who has struggled to live up to the pressure of taking over from long-time hill captain Patrick Bruggen, stepped up and took a surprise win.
A few weeks later, experienced Patrick Bruggen showed that he is not completely done yet and took home an overall 7th place in the Division 3 tour, Tour of the Western Cape.
It's not only the hill team that has delivered. A big part of the teams success this season has been a steady stream of top-9 results from the sprint team. 25 year old Nikolaj Majzlík has shown that he is not only a captain for the future but is ready to deliver already.
The future is looking bright for Team Blitz as well. Majzlïk has many years left in him, and he is surrounded by young riders yet to hit their prime. And on the hill team, 24 year old Osvaldo Águeda has arrived as the obvious candidate to take over from Patrick Bruggen, having a very similar skillset as the aging star. Here too, there is a young team of supporting riders ready to deliver results for years to come.
Now all there is left to do is lean back and see what Season 66 delivers.
